How old were you when you started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?:

35

Had you tried any other martial arts before your tried Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?:

Yes! I trained in karate when I was younger and some general combative while in the Army.

What made you want to start training BJJ?:

After completing a trial class to inspire my kids to give it a try, I really enjoyed the mental and physical challenge it gave me. I have struggled in the past with a gym and fitness routine because I would get bored with the monotony. With BJJ it was different every class and that was a game changer for me. It was like chess for your body. No two rolls were the same! This coupled with the confidence it gave me to do something for me (not for my kids, husband, or family) was nothing short of life changing. I realized BJJ was the first life decision I made for just me since I joined the army almost 20 years ago. It brings me joy and a sense of accomplishment that goes beyond all the different roles I fill in my life.

How did you hear about Blythewood Jiu Jitsu?:

I tried the free class as an invite from one of the owners and got hooked!

What do you like about training at Blythewood Jiu Jitsu?:

I love the laid back atmosphere! The focus is about learning and fundamentals. There is absolutely no judgement about fitness level and everyone is so welcoming and supportive!

What advice would you give someone in your stage of life, if they were thinking about training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?:

Do it! You are not too old to start! You are not too out of shape to start! Believe in yourself and trust the process of learning. It will feel like drinking from a fire hose at first, but I promise after a few no try’s it will all start to come together. You can do hard things!

What is your current favorite BJJ takedown and submission?:

Favorite takedown: any one I can get! Favorite submission: arm bar!
